Seems to be run by teenagers. Really really greasy hush puppies. Shrimp were "deveined" but veins were still attached and cooked in the batter. . .hard to eat. Even the Diet Coke tasted funny.

We stopped here on our way from Atlanta to Seabrook Island for a quick Sunday dinner. It's a nice, seemingly popular, bright place for a casual meal. We got in at 5 pm to beat the rush and we were seated immediately in a big booth, with a plastic bucket placed in a carved whole in the center of the table. We shared the deep fried pickles, which were crunchy and delicious, and the hush puppies they brought were small but super crunchy and tasty. I had a cup of She-Crab soup, which was mostly cream and butter, and not much crab. The menu advertises mostly fried food, but after these appetizers I went with the steamed platter, consisting of crab legs, oysters, and shrimp. The oysters weren't great at all. The crab legs were done right, and fairly tasty. The shrimp were spiced and, as is usually the case in Charleston -- fresh and delicious. Mom had the tuna, which was drastically overcooked and she didn't finish. My father had the steamed clams and calamari. He said the fried calamari was the worst he's ever had, while the clams were overcooked. He had an upset stomach the following morning. The servers were generally attentive and cheerful, though they forgot my Fried Okra. It wasn't a problem since I had so much other food. Overall the experience was below average, and I'll probably not return.

They had some good food. Crab cakes were fried (I guess this is how you do it) Fried Shrimp was great.

Gilligan's is a delight when you want good, fresh seafood in a casual setting. They have lots of nice fried seafood, but also the other preparations you would want to find. There is something for everyone here, and portions are generous.

Service was good. All I can say about the place that was good. We have been going to Kiawah and Seabrook Island for 10 years now and have always seen this place when you turn onto Main Rd. from US 17. After being told by friends it was good we finally tried it. Not good. Bottom line. It's fried cheap seafood. If you like it not bad i guess. I did a Caesar salad with mahi mahi for $16. The 3-4oz of fish was inedible. Over cooked like crazy. Normally will eat anything but it was beyond bad. Also the small amount of fish for so much was not good. They did credit it off the bill which was good. My daughters quesadilla was good but she eats anything. My wife had an "ok" she crab soup. And fried green tomatoes were ok but nothing special. Bottom line. We won't go back. Good luck guys!

Came here for lunch the other week and it was pretty good! We were the first people in there (got there right at 11) so we didn't have to wait on a table. I love the art work in the place. A lot of sea creatures paintings and we got to sit beside the huge fish tank so that was fun! Service was good. Our server made good suggestions! I had the soup and salad combo. My she crab soup came out first. It was decent nothing spectacular. Then came my salad which was great! Had a lot of good toppings on it and a good size. The only thing is that I asked if I could get shrimp added to my salad and when the bill came out it was freaking 6.99 for the added shrimp! It was almost as expensive as my whole meal!!! CRAZY!

Awesome had the seafood trio. Flounder scallops and shrimp were the best ever.

Ordinarily, everything we get at Gilligan's is delicious. Unfortunately this wasn't the case recently. From the time we pulled into the parking lot, we were amazed at how many people were already there. We had to park further from the restaurant than we've ever had to before. Perhaps then it was that they were so busy that our meals were subpar. For instance, the steamed broccoli was undercooked, some of the fried shrimp had not been peeled before being breaded and fried, and the honey blackened salmon was a little overcooked on the edges. On the other hand, the mashed potatoes were delicious, they accomodated my request for additional seasonings and honey on my honey blackened salmon (as well as a second request for a side dish of honey), and they were prompt on providing us a second basket of hush puppies and refilling our drinks. The staff was also very polite and attentive. We were also seated beside the fish tanks which was fun. Hopefully our meals will be a little better next time though.

Gilligan's Steamer and Raw Bar, Charleston SC Visited Gilligan's per Hawthorne front desk staff recommendation on our first night (Friday, November 28, 2014). The place is sort of hard to find and its located off the main road in a not well lit location in a shopping strip. The place was packed; however, we didn't wait long for our table. We were greeted by our waitress, who never gave us her name, and sat in a booth next to the most beautiful water tanks ever!!! We ordered, crab cakes and Hawaiian fish tacos and had a slice of key lime pie. The food was ok, taste wasn't all there. It was like eating at Red Lobster. Nothing fancy and nothing local. We ended up paying around $46 for the two of us. Overall experience: had we turned right in the main road, we would have found better places to eat. Would we go again?? No, not worth it.

Tends to get a geriatric crowd most nights of the week but has a better vibe since the renovation. She crab soup is average but the crab dip covers where the she crab lacks. Belly up to the bar if you don't want to wait for the old folks to clear out. Usually quick service with average food.

The fried shrimp is good, but everything else is just ok. For the price you can get a much better meal at other seafood places. I will probably opt to drive a little further next time.

Last time I was here was before the fire. The place is totally new. Food is ok, service is ok. Music was too loud on the patio, but they lowered it when I asked. I had to ask for wet wipes and extra napkins, something that I should not have had to ask, since eating shrimp with my fingers. They also should note on the menu when something is hot with spices, a la the shrimp dishes. Might go back. Frank G.

Finally had to try Gilligan's and sadly, it was exactly as I had expected. There wasn't anything really bad about it, but with all the amazing food/atmosphere in the Charleston area with similar or better prices, I can't say I'll ever be going back. She Crab soup was good but more like NE Clam chowder. I love NE Clam Chowder, but I was looking forward to She crab soup. Hushpuppies - Meh! Seafood gumbo - Meh at best. The $10 fish and chips was actually pretty good. The fish was amazing, although a bit too heavy on the breading. The home cooked chips were overly greasy and soggy. Atmosphere - Meh. The $10 menu might entice me back since it's so conveniently located to my home, but that's about it.

If there were 6 stars I would put it. I got the gully pot which came with crab legs, shrimp, sausage, and potatoes. Honestly, I should not have eaten it alone. It was SO MUCH. I don't like clams, so I got extra crab legs instead of those. The service was excellent, I never once had to ask for anything but some melted butter and the food was fantastic.

Gilligan's used to have some of the best hush puppies anywhere. Now? They are decent, but they just aren't as good as they used to be. Not sure why that is - they just seemed to be missing something. It could be the size. It could be that you have to ask for them over and over to get them to bring more. Whatever the case, the most attractive thing at the restaurant may be the table. That's right. The table. It's because there is a hole in the middle of the table with a bucket for throwing your scraps. More tables should have these in them. It's awesome. If you think that throwing peanut shells on the floor is good, try having a scrap bucket in the middle of the table. Even better. As to the food? Perfectly serviceable, and some of it is a quite good. The special daiquiri that was served in a coconut? Probably more touristy than anything. The fried food? Nothing so special. But the fish tacos? Dang tasty, and I would order them again. But if you are downtown or somewhere and had to drive all the way to get there? Maybe not worth the ride.

The food rated a five but the greeters at the door were less than friendly. The bar area we were seated in was very loud. The food was excellent. The fried flounder the best ever and the apricot glaze great just wish the atmosphere had been less "jock". Our waiter made for a great visit and was attentive but not over. First visit here and for the food would return and maybe if we were not in the bar area it would have been better for dining. The fried okra was delicately breaded and not over fried, fresh and perfect.

The crab legs are horrible, overcooked and small, don't waste your money. If you are conscripted to being here, go with the shrimp. Two restaurant member kept coming to check on us, Heather and a fly, so bring a fly swatter.

We were asking locals of Johns Island the best seafood and we were pointed to Gilligans. Overall I liked the food. I had the Shrimp gumbo which was really good. One knock however is the shrimp is frozen as well as most of the seafood. The waitress did say the oysters were fresh. This is the case with most seafood restaurants these days - it's just far too costly I assume to keep all fresh seafood around; probably a result of the last recession. Dad had fried oysters; wife fried shrimp; mom low country shrimp boil. As some others pointed out, the hush puppies were really good. This place is on par with some of the other seafood I have had in Charleston; good but not great.

This is a regular stop for the folks I was with, but it was my first time in the restaurant. The service was pretty good, but the food was just decent. I got the fish and chips, which came in a huge portion and tasted okay. I wish they had a better beer selection on draft, which I would have expected because their bar was rather busy for our mid-afternoon stop. All in all, it was an experience that neither wowed nor disappointed me. Three stars!

We knew we were in for a hell of a Mothers Day meal when mom put a straw in her beer. Don't know if it's true, but we all told her what would happen drinking beer thru a straw. She'd never heard that before. Anyway, I've been to this particular restaurant many times, and they have always provided the freshest and most flavorful seafood than any other. And their hush puppies are out of this world good, with bits of jalapenos inside. I usually get the fried creek shrimp, because, well, I love fried shrimp, and these are outstanding. But, this time, I changed it up a bit and ordered a platter with the Jumbo fried shrimp and fried flounder. The flounder (as my Dad states every time) is the best I've ever had. Zero fishy taste. I don't want my fish tasting like a dirty fish bowl.I took off one star because the skin was still on the flounder. That isn't a deal breaker for many, but I am particular. For sides, I got my usual french fries and cheese grits. I'm a southerner, and I know good grits, and these is good! Service was also great. Ours was funny, helpful, patient, and beautiful. I don't know how they do it, but they are some of the most beautiful servers in the world working for Gilligans. I'm talking model quality.

I enjoy coming to here and sitting in the dinning room and watching the fish in the tanks while waiting on my food. The bar area is nice and each time we have come here we can get right in at the bar. I like to décor. This place seems to bring in more of an older crowd. We hardly see younger couples here when we go. The hush puppies are good and the portion sizes are pretty big. I've always had leftovers for the next day. The bartenders have always been nice and it's hit or miss with the servers in the dinning room.

Always have the fried shrimp although some might disagree . Laid back, good seafood spot for the locals and the touristas! Recently redesigned after the fire . Bar is now closest to Main Road. Sit and watch the traffic going by until they #Complete526.

What a difference a couple of weeks makes. I was in a couple of weeks ago with some buddy's and we sat at the bar as there was a long wait. We all ordered the steamed oyster and shrimp special. The service by the bartenders for drinks and food was awesome it was a great experience. Well two weeks later my wife and stopped for dinner. We arrived around 8:15. It was not crowded but after quite a wait for server to arrive at table she told us how busy they were and needed a rest. She had a nice personality when we saw her as it was obvious she was ready for night to be over. I had oyster and shrimp special and oysters very over steamed. Some of them would fall out shell so over cooked my wife's fries were cold and greasy the hush puppies cold and greasy. The second batch of oysters were perfect but long wait. The waitress even mentioned how long. We had to eat with waitress sweeping all around us. Even if later in the night the diners experience should be the same at all hours. It was obvious waitress didn't care nor the kitchen. Consistency matters and they proved to me they don't have it

Don't bother. My crab legs were cold by the time they made it to the table. My husband's mahi mahi had two huge bones and was covered in a sauce that resembled white gravy. It was fishy indicating that it was not fresh. We should have left when we saw that the dining room was almost empty. The best part of the $60 meal was the jalapeño hushpuppies.

Everything was fantastic. Best hushpuppies in America are hot and fresh. Make sure to order cheesesticks. The popcorn shrimp, fried seafood broil, and grilled scallops tasted great. Good place for kids and groups. Very clean and nice aquariums are at the booths. The bar is also impressive. It's a must for a great beach dinner.

She crab soup and a shrimp bucket, YUM! Usually all a restaurant has to do is have these two items on the menu and thats an automatic 4-stars. However, the she crab soup was barely lukewarm when I got it and the service was painfully slow. This restaurant isn't really near anything, so I wouldn't make a special trip to go here for a shrimp bucket. So this place is OK. Not much more to say about it.

I went to Gilligan's with some family the other night and rather enjoyed it. It's a great place for local seafood and a nice atmosphere. The only real down side I have to say is the walls were kind of dirty and they really needed to mop. The food was very good though. For our appetizers we ordered fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, and the calamari. with our drinks they brought out some free hush puppies that are delicious. The calamari was cooked just right and the fried pickles are great! I'm not a huge fan of the fried green tomatoes but they had a good flavor. For my entree I ordered the crab cakes. I only got two crab cakes (for $15.95) and the she crab soup and green beans as my two sides. The crab cakes were absolutely perfect though. They had a great amount of meat in them and they were cooked perfectly. I would go back just for their she crab soup though. It was fantastic! If you're looking for an inexpensive place to have dinner this is NOT your place. I'd have to say they're a little over priced and I expected more than 2 crab cakes for $15.95. Everything was delicious though, and I'd go back for sure.

I'm not a huge seafood fan (I prefer freshwater fish), but agreed to accompany some coworkers for dinner at Gilligan's Tuesday evening. Walking in, I was pleased by the atmosphere: casual, but in a classy way. The giant booth we were seated in seemed to only add to the ambiance. And I like the paper menus, those were neat. They had an all-you-can-eat shrimp special, so I was down with that! You could choose from fried, grilled or steamed, and it came with 3 sides (I got fried shrimp with fried okra, fried asparagus (uh, yum!) and fried frenches...). We were greeted with a basket of jalapeno hush puppies that were small, but still moist. The flavor of the jalapeno was faint, but you got a trace of it here and there. Neither the fried nor grilled shrimp seemed to have any flavor, and required the use of coctail sauce. I didn't have any steamed, but others did and said it was overcooked. Overall the food was ok. Not bad, but nothing special. Service was good. It took a little while to get our initial order, but reorders on the shrimp were pretty prompt.

Stopped by for lunch with friends. Nothing to rave about, but pretty good all in all. On the scale of * looking for a place for an out-of-towner that wants seafood*, Gilligans satisfied the need. The place was clean and the staff was very friendly. The food was more creative than most chain's around town. Our friend from out of town raved about her food. All in all we were pleased. Nothing to rave about, but pretty good all in all.

This looks like a place the locals would visit, so we did too! We camped nearby at Oak Plantation. I had the shrimp scampi which was very good and my wife had the fried jumbo shrimp. Both were very good although not what we've come to know as jumbo. She had fries and I had mashed potatoes, home style. Both good as well. My daughter had popcorn shrimp with fries and her husband, who doesn't like seafood, had a burger and fries. Both very good, we also had the coleslaw which was good with just a hint of sweetness. Hush puppies were excellent , but the calamari appetizer was just average. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. All in all not a bad dining experience, but I would have expected seafood to be a bit cheaper this close to the ocean.

A regular stop on our trips to Seabrook Island. Nothing spectacular but good regular seafood. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Very efficient and friendly. We will continue to visit when we are in the area. Not worth a long drive but since it is on the way to / from Charleston from Seabrook, we usually stop.

Very low quality, basic dishes. With such fresh seafood available in this area there is just no reason to eat here!

Not sure why anyone would eat here when there are so many good seafood restaurants in town. Yet the parking lot is always full.

Received immediate seating and prompt service. Shrimp Scampi was okay as was my wife's broiled shrimp. Nothing special. Waitress was attentive until we were ready to leave. No one could locate her. Finally the owner brought us our bill.

This is the original Gilligans, where it all started. So you'd expect the food to be the best. Not exactly. I've been to other Gilligans that are much better. While I'm not a huge Gilligans fan, because it's average seafood for above average prices, but my grandparents love the place. After going here last Sunday though, I think they don't care for it much now. My grandfather only ate one of his scallops, because they were too dry and tasteless. I had the Grouper fingers and fried oysters. I figured you couldn't really screw that up too much, but it was very bland and I had to utilize the cocktail sauce. On the bright side, their hush puppies were good.
